The process of writing normally involves transcribing one's conscious thoughts onto paper. This process changes when someone engages in automatic writing.
Automatic writing has been equated with autography, psychography and spirit writing. Autography is the process where someone is practicing automatic writing and the words appear in their own handwriting. Psychography is the form of automatic writing where the individual overcomes mental censorship to reach the thoughts of the unconscious mind. Spirit writing is a practice where spirits communicate with the living through someone engaging in automatic writing. Automatic writing is an exercise in which many people can participate. There are certain recommendations to follow. Procedures for Automatic WritingThe individual should first get comfortable by finding a quiet place that is free of distraction for about fifteen to twenty minutes. A pen or pencil and paper should be on the table and they may write the date on the top of the paper. They should clear their mind of random thoughts and formulate one specific question to ask during the session. The next step is to systematically relax all muscles of the body. Their eyes should close slightly and they can hold the writing implement softly. Once this level of relaxation is reached, the person is ready to begin automatic writing as they can now be receptive to forces that may move the hand. Automatic writing may also be done on a computer. Take the same preparation steps as listed above. Once the person is relaxed, they should place their fingers on the keyboard and focus on an object near the computer. Focusing on an object will occupy the analytical left portion of the brain while the creative right side of the brain is open to the automatic writing process. As the session begins, some practitioners may notice their hand being in motion almost immediately while others may see their hand form continuous circles. Newcomers to this practice may think their own thoughts are being transcribed but the process of tapping the subconscious mind will become easier as they become more experienced. Automatic writing provides a safe, non-frightening way to contact a spirit guide. It also helps those who may not have psychic abilities to communicate with a spirit guide. Individuals who wish to gain a spiritual perspective on a difficult problem or just have a basic question may find automatic writing very helpful in these endeavors. It is helpful for them to think of a spirit guide as being part of their inner being or an extension of themselves. Once the individual begins to engage in automatic writing, they should not analyze what they have written as this will interfere with the entire process of getting in touch with their subconscious mind. It is also recommended to set a timer on an automatic writing session as it will help the practitioner keep the mind in a more receptive state. Communicating with your Spirit GuideThe first sessions of automatic writing usually involve basic information such as the spirit guide’s name and their possible relationship to the practitioner. The individual should then ask simple questions that can be answered with "yes" or "no." More intimate questions may be asked in later sessions. One may ask spiritual questions at the second automatic writing session. They may ask about their spiritual work and their relationship with the spirit guide. At the third session the practitioner may raise questions regarding world affairs and personal questions may be asked at the fourth and subsequent session. When an individual is in the process of automatic writing, they should be in touch with their instinctual feelings. If they feel comfortable while doing this, they should continue. However, if feelings of uneasiness or fear arise, the session should end immediately. Automatic writing is an exercise almost anyone can practice. Although no psychic ability is needed, the practitioner should keep an open mind and expect gradual progress. Sources:
