The British Big Cats Society has been collecting data on big cat sightings in the British Isles for the last six years. During that time, about 1,000 sightings per year have been documented.
Accounts of lynx and puma sightings have been reported to the Society. It would seem that people are more apt to share their experiences now; they feel that they are more apt to be believed, perhaps. As the Society becomes better known, they also now know they have an organization they can go to to make a report.
Were we wrong in thinking these animals had died out years ago in the region, or are these the descendents of escaped circus or zoo animals? Or just a case of mistaken identity?
My next article will look at big cats in Britain in more detail.
