They are not a gift or curse...they are a talent, skill, ability we have the choice to either use or abuse (some even claim we have a gland for this purpose - the pineal). We can open/expand this ability through our own efforts and techniques or we can leave them dormant. If we thought of them as a gift, we would not take any responsibility for the talent and expect outside influence (whoever gave the gift) to do all the work. If we acknowledge it is a talent within our own abilities we use it to its best advantage.
It is never a curse. It is merely to be used or lost.
Psychic abilities are not about attuning to spirit realms. That is a medium. It is about reading the energies of life around all of us with a sensitivity to our senses. The ones used in the material vibration can be taken to another level - psychic - and used to form a message. It is very dependant upon the psychic's own mind and development.
There are courses and education available for those who wish to open/expand their awareness. It is important to seek a spiritual base. Anyone can be psychic, it takes an effort to make it a spiritual exercise.

That's an interesting take on it. One can think of other examples where a talent can be both, though. Someone that has a talent for singing or acting, say, can have great material success at the expense of a healthy lifestyle (they abuse alcohol or drugs, have lousy personal relationships, etc.). Great wealth can be used for the good or can also lead to lousy lifestyle choices. It's all dependent on what you do with it. And if you choose to develop your talent, you need to be prepared for all the consequences that can come with it.-- posted by jcredmond

All of our talents, skills, abilities have an up side and a down side. It depends upon our own focus in the skill. We can choose to use it for good or we can choose to abuse it for anyone who wants a piece of us.This is true in ALL our talents and skills - your example being a prime one for examination. There are many talented actors for every one that abuses drugs and/or alcohol in their journey. That is their choice! Would they not have used drugs without the use of their acting talent?
Material success can become a focus and need over and above all other aspects of our lives. Or gaining success but keeping a balance within ourselves, can also be the results of using our talents. Again, free will choice! What we focus upon we will manifest!

.There is an interesting book your readers might want to read.
On Intelligence, by Jeff Hawkins; published by Henry Holt and Company, New York. It's subtitle is, "How A New Understanding of The Brain Will Lead To The Creation of Truly Intelligent Machines".
.
Not to dispute anything at all about psychic phenomenon; but, the book offers what might be seen as a plausible explanation of the so-called psychic abilities.

In response to The Brain posted by pink101:Brain injured individuals can still function in physical ways. They do not need the brain to exercise mind (in which there is consciousness).

In response to The Brain posted by pink101:In chakra studies the solar plexus is usually seen as the colour yellow (which is the mental colour) so it is a source of information gathering. What we receive by intuition (gut feelings) is as valid as any intellectual thoughts.
