I don't think they were erected as tombstones. But it's entirely possible that islanders did bury their dead at the foot of these sacred statues. Everything I've read suggests the Moai statues were repositories and symbols of sacred spirit. They were allegedly charged with a magic spiritual essence (called 'mana').

Researchers studying Incan masonry in Peru suggest that there's great similarity between the statues, rock carvings and walls on Easter Island. Peru also had a birdman culture like the Easter Islanders. I've seen the Incans dressed in birdman costumes dance at native American pow wows.

A long time back, I studied the Moai statues and other types of carvings as part of a sculpture class I was taking. Easter Island has some fantastic rock carvings and cave art of birds and birdmen. Examples here;
