In response to beginner with questions posted by delchrys:You are like many who see so much scam artistry happening around that you don't know where to turn.
The National Spiritualist Association of Churches of America is a great place to start. You can find their web site at http://www.nsac.org/ You can contact them and they may be able to suggest a church in your area.
I would warn you though that every Spiritualist Church is different and you need to check them out for yourself. My rule of thumb is to stay away from any that are not associated to any umbrella organization. Independent Spiritualist Churches are businesses regardless of how they try to disguise it and when they have no on to answer to it is hard to know what the money is going towards. Many do NOT have a charitable number and so any money you donate may just end up in the founder's own pocket.
The best thing you can do is use common sense and thoroughly check out whatever organization you are interested in. Don't just take participants' word for the status of the church. Be sure to check with your local, state and Federal government to see what they have on the said organization. I blog regularly and this is one blog where I share my experiences. http://spiritualcat.blogspot.com/2006/10...
I hope you find it helpful.

It will give you a very good idea of how some of the spiritual shysters work as well....

It is best if you can work with a home circle or spiritualist church group that has reputable leadership. Working with a group will allow you to share your experiences and learn from the experiences of others in the group. Good leaders will guide your learning without trying to control you for their own purposes. You will know if a group is right for you by your own comfort level when you attend their meetings. I am assuming you do not know of any good home circles in your area and suggest you try the churches as mentioned in my post above this one. Just make sure you do your homework at the same time as there are some churches out there you would be wise to steer clear of. As with any following, group or teachings there are good and bad practitioners so be sure you go in with your eyes wide open and make sure that you get answers to your questions that satisfy and make sense to you.
Blessings,
